Best motivational quote:

Don’t wait for a light to appear

At the end of the tunnel,

Stride down there…..

And light the bloody thing yourself.

Sara Henderson 1936-2005.  Australian outback station manager and writer.

Best bluebells

From Wootton Fitzpaine, just north of Charmouth, drive or walk through the forest along Champernhayes Lane.  Magic.

Best all round view

Has to be from Hardy's monument.  From the tower, depending on the clarity of sky you can see all the surrounding counties, Weymouth, Portland, Jurassic Coast.  Fabulous!  Reach  from the B3159 at Martinstown just west of Dorchester or zigzag from the B3157 through Abbotsbury following signs for Dorchester.

Best goosebump moment

Singing carols on Broad St in Lyme Regis.  Nice people, a brass band, the sound of the sea, hot soup and mince pies, the moon, stars, fairy lights, the tree……..Away In A Manager…..Christmas like you always want it to be.

Best Enchanted Evening

For me it started on the drive when I saw Abbotsbury twinkling in the valley.  To the left, St Catherine’s Priory was floodlit, like a magic castle.  Looking right, the full moon cast a sheen over the sea.  Then walking into the Subtropical Gardens at Abbotsbury, seeing lanterns, candles,  exotic plants with foliage liked iced lace.  And Palm trees shining in multi colours.  Hands cupped around a mug of hot chocolate.   That was some enchanted evening.

Best Networking Book

Networking - The Art of Making Friends

By Carole Stone
Published by Vermilion in 2000 at £7.99

No-one Networks like Carole. As a former producer of the BBC’ s Any Questions? she has an address book running into thousands. Carole is one of the least likely people in London to have spare time but she replies to e-mails. And that means a lot. She’s warm and friendly, encouraging and generous with her support.

If you have any doubts about how to Network, what gives you the edge, how to cope with rejection, or what the etiquette is on Networking then I urge you to read this book.

Best networking quote

If someone listens, or stretches out a hand

Or whispers a word of encouragement,

Or attempts to understand a lonely person,

Extraordinary things begin to happen

Loretta Firzaris born 1920. American educator and writer

Best street fair

Evershot, for atmosphere, sheer location range of stalls, organisation.

Best Dorset Apple Cake

There are so many recipes for this but Network members are unanimous in their findings and samplings. Skip the ones crusted with cinnamon and brown sugar.   Ditto all those made with wholemeal flour.  For a cake that's luscious, warm, filled with  soft apples and  served  with clotted cream on the side……..Nikki Exton at the Downhouse Farm, Higher Eype.  Consistently delicious.

Best fireworks

Actually, there are no best fireworks because countywide they're all so lovely.  And one of the great things about living in a tourist area is that you get lots of events.  Here are three tried and tested:-

Bournemouth Pier on Friday evenings in peak summer season.   Very romantic as well if you’re walking on the beach with someone special.

Lyme Regis for Bonfire Night.  Great display reflecting on to the sea from the Cobb walls.

West Bay – to mark the end of the Bridport carnival.  In late August – a spectacular river of fire with a torchlight parade from Bridport town all the way to the beach at West Bay.  Bonfire, BBQ, live band and fireworks from east pier.

Best thought provoking words

Used by Nelson Mandela at his acceptance speech.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate

Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure

It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.

We ask ourselves:

“Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?”

Actually, who are you not to be?

You are a child of God.

Your playing small doesn’t serve the world.

There is nothing enlightening about shrinking so that other people around you won’t feel insecure.

We are all meant to shine as children do.

We are born to manifest the glory of God that is within us.

It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone.

And as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.

As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically releases others.
